Assignments listed below are due at the first class meeting, will be collected and graded by your Language Arts Teacher.
1. Read The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver (ISBN: 0061765228) Take notes chapter by chapter as you read. Write a brief plot summary of a few sentences for each chapter. Also take notes on important elements of character, setting and theme.
- You may want to purchase a copy of the book and take notes in the margins or write your comments on post-it notes and place them in the book as you go.
- You may also choose to write the notes on separate paper. Please label notes with your name date and page numbers if you choose to write the notes on separate paper.
2. Complete one of the following creative writing responses. The assignment should be at least 500 words in length. Legibly handwritten is fine. Label with your name, date and assignment title.
a) New chapter - As you know, Taylor Greer is the narrator of The Bean Trees. Write a new chapter for the novel, and tell some part of the story from another character’s point of view. Your chapter should reflect Barbara Kingsolver’s writing style, and may occur at the beginning, middle or end of the novel. In your assignment title for this piece, indicate what chapter you have created.
b) Diary - From the perspective of a character of your choosing, write a series of diary entries that reflect the character’s thoughts, actions, and opinions.
c) Newspaper - Create a newspaper that reports on the important events that are presented in the novel. Try to include as many elements of an authentic newspaper as possible such as headlines, bylines, and photgraphs with captions.
